Propolis is produced by bees by reworking, through their enzymatic glandular secretions, some resinous and rubbery substances that they themselves collect. For external use, propolis is used in gargle and rinse for aphthae, pyorrhea, gingivitis, stomatitis, etc. For internal use, it can be useful as an adjuvant in flu syndromes, in tonsillitis, in laryngeal-pharyngitis, in aphthas, in stomatitis and gingivitis. The most recent studies on propolis indicate three main groups of substances contained: 1. Polyphenols and aromatic compounds (flavonoids, aromatic hydroxy acids, alcohols and aromatic halides, curarins); 2. The flavonoids galangin and pinocembrine, are responsible for bacteriostatic activity, the esters of caffeic acid and cumaric acid ρ, are attributed antifungal properties, many isoflavones, have spasmolytic activity. Propolis also has anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombogenic and anti-aggregate properties; it prevents capillary fragility and permeability anomalies.
